Over January-February 2024, India’s crude steel production rose 16% YoY compared with a mere 2% growth in global crude steel production. Developed economies like the U.S. and Japan recorded tepid growth in steel production during this period (U.S. 6% and Japan 1%). The period was also marked by rising imports and subdued steel prices in India, as China continued to resort to exports in the face of sluggish local demand and elevated production. Major base metals were stable during the quarter, with aluminium prices improving by 0.4% QoQ, and zinc and lead recording a 2.2% and 1.5% decline, respectively. Copper prices were the most resilient, and rose by 4.5% QoQ.
