Brazil’s Bolsonaro Released From Hospital After Feeling Ill

Brazil’s Bolsonaro Admitted to Hospital After Feeling Ill

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was released from the hospital early Tuesday, less than 12 hours after being admitted due to abdominal discomfort.

Local TV news network GloboNews showed images of a presidential convoy of cars leaving the hospital on Tuesday in Brasilia as part of its report of the discharge. He was taken for testing after feeling unwell, Communications Minister Fabio Faria said late Monday.

While the government didn’t immediately provide additional details about the president’s condition, website UOL reported that Bolsonaro had been admitted to the Armed Forces hospital on concern that he might be suffering from another intestinal obstruction, citing government officials.

Bolsonaro, 67, has undergone numerous surgeries and been hospitalized several times to deal with the aftermath of the stabbing he suffered on the campaign trail in 2018. His latest hospital stay was in January.

The president kicked off his re-election campaign on Sunday ahead of the October vote and had been scheduled to attend an evening event organized by the Republican Party. Marcos Pereira, the party president, said that Bolsonaro instead had gone to the hospital.

“First Lady, receive my regards, our prayers,” Pereira told attendees. “I’m sure the president is fine -- it’s just some tests he’s doing, so he’s not here.”

The Presidency’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
