Harsh Beria is not your average 25-year-old. A PhD assistant in Switzerland, he has already charted his life’s course for the next five years and aims to be financially independent in about 20 years.

It isn’t that he wants to retire at 45. In fact, he admitted, he would probably want to continue working till he’s well past 70 years of age.

Beria knows that he may continue working in Switzerland for the next five years. After that, he’ll return to India. At some point between now and then, he plans to get married and has set up a ‘contingency’ fund of Rs 20 lakh for the expenses that this will entail.

Beria, however, is unsure of how much he’ll be spending when he returns to India. So, he thinks it’s better to overestimate his requirements for the purpose of calculating the corpus he needs to build. His goal is to find out how much he would need to save by 2040 to support a livelihood that costs Rs 12 lakh a year today.

On this episode of BQPortfolio, Arvind Rao, founder of Arvind Rao & Associates and a SEBI-registered investment adviser, helps Beria plan his investments.
