IMD Forecasts ‘Above Normal’ South West Monsoon For 2024

El nino conditions is to weaken in the early part of the monsoons, said IMD in a press briefing on Monday.

India is likely to witness 'above normal' South-Western monsoon in 2024, according to Indian Meteorological Department. South West monsoons is forecasted at 106% of the long period average. Most conditions are favourable for monsoons, IMD said in a press release on Monday.

El Nino conditions are expected to weaken towards the start of the monsoon season. The southwest monsoon season, as per the weather agency, will have a reading of more than 104% of the Long Period Average. The seasonal rainfall is likely to be 106% of LPA with a model error 5%.

It is noteworthy that at the start of the month, the weather agency forecast for extreme summer heat in certain regions of the country such as South, West India.

In India, June to September period is when the South-Western monsoon months, when the subcontinent receives most of its rainfall.

Apart from IMD, private weather forecasting agency Skymet last week forecast for a normal monsoon as it too expects El Nino conditions to transition in to La Lina conditions. However, during the transition, India may experience some disruption.
