India's stock benchmarks snapped three day losing streak in a volatile session on May F&O expiry day, aided by gains in banking, metal and information technology stocks.

The Sensex added over 500 points (over 0.9%) to 54,252.53. The 30-stock gauge fell 0.6% to an intraday low of 53,425.25 and traded in a broad 900 point range. The Nifty advanced by similar magnitude to 16,170.15.

The Midcap index outperformed Sensex and Nifty while the Smallcap measure underperformed its larger peers. Barring the fmcg index, all the other 18 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. advanced with S&P BSE Metal adding over 3.3%.

The market breadth was skewed in the favour of bulls. About 1,779 stocks advanced, 1,520 declined and 130 remained unchanged.

Thermal power plant developer RattanIndia Enterprises buys 60% stake in leading domestic drone maker Throttle Aerospace Systems Pvt. This investment has been done through NeoSky India, a subsidiary of RattanIndia Enterprises.

  • The company said it will target global markets for its drone products and services and reiterated plans to acquire best intellectual capital and technology available in the drone sector.

  • With this acquisition NeoSky will be able to provide full 360 degree drone solutions to customers with Drones as a Product, Drone as a Service and Software as a Service.

Mid-Day Market Update: Sensex, Nifty Off Day's Low; HDFC Twins, Metals Gain

India's stock benchmarks declined, but off day's low. Losses in power, energy and consumer discretionary stocks dragged the markets as they offset gains in metals, financials. Volatility has also been on display with Sensex and Nifty opening with gains for the fifth day, only to decline during the session. The benchmarks on their way to log losses for the fourth consecutive day over the same period, with May series F&O expiry day volatility set to be a likely factor in the final hours of trade.

The Sensex lost 0.30% to 53,590.47. The Nifty declined by similar magnitude to 15,970.75.

The MidCap index outperformed its larger peers while the SmallCap index mirrored Sensex and Nifty. Twelve of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. declined with power and utilities indices falling the most. On the flipside, metal index added 2%.

The market breadth was skewed in the favour of bears. About 1,079 stocks advanced, 2,120 declined and 120 remained unchanged.

Aurobindo Pharma's subsidiary Eugia Pharma received final approval from U.S. FDA to manufacture and market Pemetrexed for injection, 100 mg, 500 mg and 1000 mg.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.5% to 53,999.81. The Nifty 50 advanced by similar magnitude to 16,093.65.

Stocks in Asia rose on Thursday after the Wall Street advanced after Federal Reserve minutes struck a lesser-than-anticipated hawkish note.

Equities in Japan, Australia and South Korea gained. US futures fell after the S&P 500 recovered to log gains in a volatile session. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 outperformed.

The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early barometer of India's benchmark Nifty 50, rose nearly 0.50% to 16,102 points as of 8:10 a.m.

Elsewhere, West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.6% to $110.97 a barrel. Bitcoin hovered around $30,000.
