India's stock benchmarks snapped two-day winning streak in a volatile session. The Sensex and Nifty reversed nearly 1% gains as fall in telecom, realty, metals and consumer durables offset the rise in fmcg and healthcare stocks.

The Sensex fell 0.20% to 54,208.53. The 30-stock gauge gained over 460 points to an intraday high of 54,786. The Nifty also declined by similar magnitude to 16,240.30.

The S&P BSE MidCap almost mirrored its larger peers while the S&P BSE SmallCap outperformed Sensex and Nifty, rising 0.33%. Sixteen of the 19 sectoral indices declined with S&P BSE Realty losing nearly 2% and S&P BSE Telecom falling 1%.

The market breadth is skewed in the favour of bulls. About 1,920 stocks advanced, 1,429 declined and 117 remained unchanged.
