India's stock benchmarks swung to gains during the final hour to continue its winning streak for the fifth day in a volatile session, aided by energy, information technology and power stocks.

The Sensex ended with nearly 100 points, 0.16%, gains at 59,202.90 on the BSE. This was the second consecutive session when the gauge closed over 59,000. During the early season, the 30-stock measure lost over 300 points to hit intraday low of 58,791.28 before rebounding to extend its winning streak.

The Nifty 50 closed with 0.3%, 52 points, gains at 17,563.95 on the NSE. Among the Nifty 50 constituents, 36 stocks rose while 14 fell.

UPL Ltd., Adani Enterprises Ltd., Tech Mahindra Ltd., HCL Technologies Ltd. and Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. were the top gainers, while IndusInd Bank Ltd., Asian Paints, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., UltraTech Cement Ltd., and HDFC Bank Ltd. declined the most among index constituents.

The broader indices underperformed their larger peers with the mid-cap gauge losing 0.3% and the small-cap measure closing little changed. Eleven of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. advanced with energy, information technology, utilities, oil & gas, power, and realty indices rising over 1%.

The market breadth was skewed slightly in favour of the bears. About 1,657 stocks rose, 1,762 fell, and 136 remained unchanged.
