Sensex, Nifty Log Gains In A Volatile Session: Market Wrap

This is the fifth straight of session of gains for the benchmarks.

India's stock benchmarks ended a volatile session with marginal gains, led by power, auto and FMCG stocks.

The Sensex closed 21 points higher at 58,135.36. The 30-day stock gauge had dropped nearly 400 points to an intraday low of 57,744.70, before erasing the losses.

The Nifty 50 ended 5 points higher at 17,345.45.

This is the fifth straight of session of gains for the benchmarks.

Of the Nifty 50 constituents, 28 stocks rose and 22 fell. IndusInd Bank Ltd., Asian Paints Ltd. and NTPC Ltd. were among the top gainers, while UPL Ltd. was the biggest laggard.

The broader indices outperformed their larger peers. The mid-cap gauge rose 0.5%, while the small-cap index gained 0.34%.

Ten of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. declined, with realty losing nearly 2%. Metals and information technology, too, declined.

The power index gained more than 2%.

The market breadth was skewed in favour of the bulls. About 1,883 stocks rose, 1,488 fell and 123 remained unchanged.
