India's stock benchmarks ended a volatile session with gains, aided by information technology.

The Sensex closed more than 200 points higher at 58,350.53. That's an over 500-point jump from its intraday low.

The Nifty 50 gained 0.3% to 17,388.15. The benchmarks rose for the sixth straight session.

Half of the Nifty 50 constituents rose, while the remaining half fell. Tech Mahindra Ltd., Infosys Ltd. and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. were among the top gainers.

The broader indices underperformed their larger peers. The mid-cap gauge lost 0.6%, while the small-cap index fell 0.3%.

Sixteen of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by the BSE declined. The S&P BSE Information Technology, Teck and Finance were the only three gainers.

The market breadth, however, was skewed in favour of the bears. About 1,376 stocks rose, 1,971 fell, and 137 remained unchanged.
