India's stock benchmarks ended firm for the second day in a row, posting the biggest gains in over a week, aided by gains across sectoral indices.
However, global equities were subdued as the two-week FOMC meeting begins on Tuesday. Consumer durables and healthcare gauges jumped the most among the Nifty indices.
The Sensex rose nearly 1% to close at 59,719.74 after having gained 965 points to hit intraday high of 60,105.79 on the BSE. The Nifty added nearly 200 points to end at 17,816.25 on the NSE. Among Nifty 50 constituents, 44 stocks rose while six fell.
Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, Cipla Ltd, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Eicher Motors Ltd., and IndusInd Bank Ltd. advanced the most. Coal India Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., Nestle India Ltd., Grasim Industries Ltd. and Shree Cement Ltd. were the six stocks that closed lower.
The small cap measure almost mirrored Sensex and Nifty while mid cap gauge outperformed, adding 1.65%.
The market breadth was skewed in the favour of bulls. About 2,106 stocks rose, 1,365 stocks fell and 131 remained unchanged.
