The festival of Diwali is one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu religion and is celebrated with much fervour, ceremony and splendour across the country and the world. As per Hindu beliefs, the festival of Diwali signifies the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness. Diwali is also considered to be an auspicious occasion for new beginnings, ventures and investments. One popular tradition that has been practised on Diwali every year is the tradition of Muhurat trading.

Muhurat Trading 2022: Date And Timings

On the occasion of Diwali, both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will open to allow trading for exactly 1 hour, which is called the tradition of ‘Muhurat Trading’. This year, the Muhurat Trading will take place on Monday,  October 24, from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm. The stock market will only be open for this one hour and closed throughout the rest of the day. The Pre-Open Market session will be held from 6:00 pm to 6:08 pm. On this day, traders will make ceremonial trades keeping in with the old tradition as it is considered auspicious for new beginnings and investments, and supposed to bring luck and good fortune. The BSE has been following this tradition for about six decades now and will conduct a Laxmi Pujan, followed by an award ceremony for top performers.

Historically, the stock indices have performed really well on the occasion of Diwali Muhurat. Experts attribute this phenomenon to the idea that the market remains bullish since Diwali is a major festive occasion that focuses on prosperity and wealth. However, it’s important to note that the stock market can be a bit volatile given the extremely high trading volumes in a single hour. Financial experts advise investors to only invest in companies with strong fundamentals and past performance and not get swayed by the excitement of the Muhurat trading.

History of Diwali Muhurat Trading

The term ‘Muhurat’ in Muhurat trading is a Sanskrit/Hindi word and translates to an auspicious occasion or to be more precise, an auspicious time. As per Hindu beliefs, Muhurat is a time when the planets align in favourable positions and help in bringing about positive outcomes. As a tradition, stockbrokers in India started their new year on the day of Diwali. The stockbrokers would open settlement accounts for their customers during Diwali on the auspicious time of ‘Muhurat’. The stockbrokers and traders also had the tradition of conducting a pooja on their account books during Diwali. Over time, Muhurat trading became a symbolic custom and a regular practice among stockbrokers and traders in India, as they believed Diwali Muhurat to be an auspicious time. Many investors also do ‘Laxmi Pujan’ and then invest in the stock market and purchase the mutual funds and shares of companies that they want. Both NSE and BSE hold the Diwali Muhurat trading sessions every year, and the session is divided into different parts that include: a block deal session, a pre-open session, a normal market session, a call auction session, and finally the closing session.
