Midday Market Update: Sensex, Nifty Gain As Power, Oil & Gas Stocks Surge

Sensex, Nifty rose, aided by gains in power, metal, oil and gas stocks in a volatile session so far.

India's stock benchmarks rose, aided by gains in power, metal, and oil and gas stocks.

The 30-stock Sensex had added 132.91 points to hover around 59,378.89 on the BSE. The Nifty 50 traded around 17,704.95 on the NSE. Among the Nifty 50 constituents, 29 stocks rose while 20 fell. One stock remained unchanged.

Bharti Airtel Ltd., Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd., NTPC Ltd., Cipla Ltd. and Coal India Ltd. were the top gainers, while Britannia Industries Ltd., Bajaj Finserv Ltd., Nestle India Ltd., Tata Consumer Products Ltd., and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. were the top laggards.

The broader indices outperformed larger peers with mid cap gauge gaining 0.6% and small cap measure jumping 0.4%. Fifteen of the 19 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. advanced with oil & gas index gaining 1.55%.

The market breadth is skewed in the favour of bulls. About 1,811 stocks rose, 1,523 fell and 157 remained unchanged.
