Covid-19 India Updates: Highest New Cases In Nearly Four Months At 13,216, 23 Deaths In A Day

India added the highest Covid-19 cases in nearly four months, stoking fears of another wave building up in some parts of the densely-populated country.

The world’s second-most populous country added 13,216 new confirmed coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on June 18. That’s the highest since Feb. 24, and the third straight day of more than 10,000 cases.

  • Daily positivity rate: 2.73%

  • Weekly positivity rate: 2.47%

Fresh infections have been exceeding daily recoveries for nearly a month. That drove up the active tally, now accounting for 0.16% of the total case count. Recoveries form 98.63%.

India has administered 196 crore jabs, with 15 lakh vaccine doses administered in the last 24 hours. Total tests conducted so far stand at 85.73 crore, with 4.84 lakh in the last 24 hours.

Goa Sees 139 Cases, No Death

Goa on Saturday reported 139 Covid-19 cases, taking its tally to 2,47,073, while the death toll remained unchanged at 3,833, an official said.

The recovery count increased by 77 during the day to reach 2,42,507, leaving the coastal state with 733 active cases, he added.

With 1,182 samples being examined on Saturday, the overall number of tests went up to 19,67,801, the official informed.

Odisha's Active Tally Crosses 200

Odisha reported 38 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, taking the tally to 12,88,800, the Health Department said.

The toll remained at 9,126 with no new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The state now has 202 active cases, while 12,79,419 people have recovered from the disease, including 21 since Friday, the Health Department said.

The positivity rate was 0.28% as the new cases were detected after testing 13,437 samples.

Puducherry Reports 21 New Cases

The Union Territory of Puducherry logged 21 new Covid-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 1,66,044, a senior health official said on Saturday.

Director of Health G Sriramulu, in a release, said the health department examined 1,559 samples during the last 24 hours and 21 new cases surfaced during evaluation in the Union Territory.

There was no fresh fatality on Saturday and the death toll remained unchanged at 1,962.

Seven patients recovered during the last 24 hours and the overall recoveries were 1,63,968, the director said.

The test positivity rate was 1.35%, while fatality and recovery rates were 1.8% and 98.75%, respectively.

15 New Cases In Andamans

The Covid-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 10,079 on Saturday as 15 more people tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said.

All the fresh infections were detected during contact tracing, it said. The Union territory had reported only one new case on the previous day. There are now 24 active cases in the archipelago, while 9,926 people have recovered from the disease so far, including two in the last 24 hours.

A total of 129 people have succumbed to the infection to date. The administration has thus far tested over 7.47 lakh samples for Covid-19, and fully vaccinated 3.40 lakh people.
