Covid-19 India Updates: Fresh Cases Stay Above 20,000 For Fifth Straight Day

India added more than 20,000 cases of Covid-19 for the fifth straight day, threatening to stall the nation’s nascent economic recovery yet again.

The world’s second-most populous nation reported 20,279 new cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on July 24.

  • Weekly positivity rate: 4.46%

Fresh infections continue to outpace daily recoveries, pushing up the active tally. Active cases now account for 0.35% of the total tally, while recoveries form 98.45%.

India has administered 201.99 crore jabs, with 28.8 lakh vaccine doses administered in the last 24 hours. Total tests conducted so far stand at 87.25 crore, with 3.84 lakh in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra Sees 2,015 Covid-19 Cases, Six Deaths

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 2,015 fresh Covid-19 cases and six fatalities, taking the tally to 80,34,261 and the toll to 1,48,062, an official said.

The addition to the tally was less than the 2,336 reported on Saturday, but the deaths increased by one from the previous day when five people had succumbed, he said.

Of the new cases, Pune circle reported 680, followed by 462 in Mumbai circle, 313 in Nagpur, 209 in Nashik, 107 in Kolhapur, 85 in Akola, 81 in Aurangabad and 78 in the Latur Circle.

Three deaths were reported in Mumbai Circle, two in Nagpur and one in Pune circle, as per state health department data.

The recovery count increased by 1,916 to touch 78,71,507, leaving Maharashtra with 14,692 active cases.

Pune leads with 5,075 active cases, followed by 1,817 in Mumbai and 1,476 in Nagpur, the data revealed.

It also showed the state's recovery rate was 97.97% and fatality rate stood at 1.84%.

82 Fresh Covid-19 Cases In Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh's Covid-19 tally rose to 65,313 on Sunday as 82 more people tested positive for the infection, the highest single-day spike this month, a senior health official said.

The state had recorded 80 new cases on Saturday.

The northeastern state's coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 296 as no fresh fatality was recorded in the last 24 hours, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

Puducherry Logs 162 New Covid-19 Cases

Puducherry reported 162 new Covid-19 cases, taking the overall caseload to 17,00,91, a senior official of the Department of Health said on Sunday.

Director of Health G Sriramulu in a bulletin said the 162 fresh cases surfaced during examination of 1,493 samples in the last 24 hours ending 10 a.m.

Puducherry region alone accounted for 121 new cases out of the 162 fresh cases, followed by 38 in Karaikal, two in Yanam and one in Mahe region.

Sriramulu said the test positivity rate was 10.85%, while the fatality and recovery rates were 1.16% and 98.08%, respectively.

No fresh fatality was reported during the last 24 hours from any of the four regions of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The death toll thus remained 1,965, the director said.

Active cases during the last 24 hours were 1,294, which comprised 25 patients in hospitals and the remaining 1,269 in home quarantine.

Sriramulu said 59 patients recovered in the last 24 hours raising the overall recoveries to 1, 66,832.

The Department of Health has so far examined 23,37,531 samples and found 19,77,552 out of them to be negative.

Sriramulu said the Department of Health has so far administered 17,91,061 doses, which comprised 9,76,984 first doses, 7,53,176 second doses and 60,901 booster doses.

Odisha Logs 1,011 New Covid-19 Cases

Odisha's Covid-19 tally rose to 13,06,510 on Sunday as 1,011 more people, including 130 children, tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said.

The toll rose to 9,132 as a 53-year-old man succumbed to the disease in Bhadrak district. Fifty-three other patients have died due to comorbidities so far.

The state had logged 1,130 cases and one fatality on the previous day.

Odisha now has 7,440 active cases, while 12,89,885 people have recovered from the disease, including 995 in the last 24 hours, it said.

Khurda district, of which state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, reported the highest number of new infections at 239, followed by 180 in Sundargarh and 105 in Sambalpur.

The daily positivity rate was 4.67% as the infections were detected from 21,666 samples that were tested.

12 Fresh Covid-19 Cases In Andamans

The Covid-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 10,375 on Sunday as 12 more people tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said.

Eight new patients have travel history, while four fresh infections were detected during contact tracing, it said.

The Union territory now has 45 active cases, while 10,201 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 15 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 129 patients have succumbed to the infection to date.

The administration has thus far tested over 7.62 lakh samples for Covid-19, and fully vaccinated 3.46 lakh people.
