Coronavirus India Updates: Confirmed Covid-19 Cases Rise To 4,281; Death Toll At 111

The total number of Confirmed Covid-19 cases in India has risen to 4,281 with 3,851 of them being active cases. The death toll has risen to 111, while 319 people have been cured and discharged. This is as per the Health Ministry update at 6 p.m.

India added 693 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours as well as reported the most number of deaths at 32.

The pandemic has now infected more than 1.3 million people worldwide with the death toll surpassing 70,000. Germany and Spain reported lower number of new cases, a tentative sign that the lockdown measures are easing the outbreak.

Andhra Pradesh Reports 37 New Cases

The total number of Covid-19 positive cases in Andhra Pradesh rose to 303 with the addition of 37 new cases.

State officials told PTI that Kurnool district added 18 new cases, taking the total tally to 74 while Nellore saw eight new cases, with the total rising to 42.

The state has reported three deaths so far.

Mumbai's Count Rises To 490

Mumbai has reported 57 new cases on Monday, taking the total Covid-19 positive cases in the country's financial capital to 490, according to PTI, quoting the BMC.

Simultaneously, four more patients have died while undergoing treatment, taking the total death toll to 34.

“As part of the contact tracing efforts, the MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai) has surveyed 15 lakh population through health teams till date and identified 665 contacts which are referred for testing,” the release said.

It stated that 130 coronavirus positive cases have been identified after five teams had visited houses and collected 1,400 samples.

ICMR On Worst-Case Scenario

ICMR has said that it is actively working to scale up the testing capacity to one lakh tests per day in the coming months. It is also in the process of identifying other government and private labs, research institutes and medical colleges which have the capability and infrastructure to undertake Covid-19 testing.

The ICMR has already approved over 200 labs, including public and private for testing through RT-PCR machines.

The ICMR will also collaborate with the World Health Organisation for a public health emergency solidarity trial which is an international randomised trial of additional treatments for Covid-19 in hospitalised patients.


53-Year Old Technician Dies In Siliguri

A 53-year old technician at Siliguri's diesel shed has succumbed to Covid-19. Following his death, at least 12 railway medical staffers, including two doctors and ten paramedical staff have been sent to home quarantine.

Officials told PTI that although his first two reports for Covid-19 returned negative, he was found positive after another test on April 4.

He was then shifted to the isolation ward of the North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMC&H).
