Active cases of Covid-19 infection in India fell below the 10-lakh mark after more than a lakh patients recovered in a single day.
The country added a little over 75,000 new cases in a matter of 24 hours -- the lowest in three weeks -- taking the total tally above 55 lakh, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 22. This includes almost 45 lakh patients who have recovered and more than 88,000 deaths.

Tuesday marks the highest number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19 in a 24-hour period.
Active cases, that have fallen back below 10 lakh, now constitutes just 18% of the total case load. Recoveries make up 80% of the tally, while the fatality rate has dropped to 1.6%.

An $18-billion initiative to deploy a vaccine around the world is moving into the next phase, with 156 countries and regions joining the programme. China and the U.S. remain on the sidelines.
America’s deaths from Covid-19 approached 200,000. U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce new restrictions on bars and restaurants. Australia’s Victoria reported a jump of new cases as the state moves closer to easing its lockdown in Melbourne. South Korean infections increased by less than 100 for a third day, the first such streak since mid-August.
Globally, cases top 31 million, deaths exceed 962,000.
