Active cases of Covid-19 in India fell today after rising for five consecutive days, amid fears of resurgence and new restrictions.

Authorities reported 10,584 new cases in 24 hours according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m on Feb. 23. That’s lower than the 13,255 recoveries in the same period, taking active cases below the 1.5 lakh once again.

These infections now account for 1.36% of the total Covid-19 cases confirmed by the authorities since the pandemic reached India in January 2020.

On Tuesday, the ministry reported 78 deaths with the total tally at over 1.56 lakh. This accounts for 1.42% of the more than 1.1 crore coronavirus cases detected in India.

Key Figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 11016434

Maharashtra Chief Minister has warned of fresh lockdowns if people do not stick to wearing masks.

Global Update

Globally, cases crossed 111.6 million leaving over 2.4 million dead.

A half-million Americans are dead as a result of the novel coronavirus that first hit U.S. shores just a little more than a year ago. President Joe Biden marked the “truly grim, heartbreaking milestone” during a ceremony at the White House.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared the end of the pandemic is “in sight” for England, as he set out his aim to ease lockdown rules in a series of stages over the next four months.

No Covid-19 Case Reported In Arunachal For Four Days

Arunachal Pradesh did not report any fresh Covid-19 case in the past four days, a health department official said on Monday.

The total caseload in the northeastern state remained at 16,836, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

Arunachal Pradesh now has five active cases, while 16,775 people have recovered from the disease.

The recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state stands at 99.63%. A total of 56 patients have succumbed to the infection.

Altogether, 4,03,950 samples have been tested for Covid-19, including 465 on Monday, Jampa said.

Maharashtra's Lockdown Threat

The chief minister of Maharashtra warned that new regional localised lockdowns could be imposed after the number of daily Covid cases rose to almost 7,000 on Sunday, accounting for about half the entire country’s reported infections.

Uddhav Thackeray said that he will monitor the situation in the state over the next two weeks and would impose movement restrictions if mask wearing rules weren’t being followed. So far India has avoided a large-scale second wave since a September peak of nearly 100,000 cases a day.
