The GST Council has raised tax rates for 17 goods and services to remove the inverted duty structure and rationalise exemptions.

The changes recommended by the council will be effective July 18, 2022.

The council held its 47th meeting on June 28 and 29 in Chandigarh. This was the first full session since September 2021, barring an emergency meeting on Dec. 31 with a single-point agenda.

The GST was exempted on specified food items, grains when not branded, or right on the brand has been foregone. The council has accepted recommendations from a group of ministers to revise the scope of exemption to exclude from it prepackaged and pre-labelled retail packs such as of curd, lassi and butter milk.
