The Supreme Court of India has partially relaxed the ceiling limit on mining of iron ore in Karnataka.

The top court earlier this month had reserved its order on applications seeking lifting of the ceiling cap on iron ore mining.

The top court bench presided by Chief Justice NV Ramana made it clear that it was not in agreement on lifting the ban on mining in toto and therefore:

  • The mining cap for the district of Bellary will be increased to 35 MMT.

  • The combined cap in districts of Chitradurga and Tumkur increased to 15 MMT.

The cap on mining was part of successive orders of the court since 2011 when petitions were filed against alleged illegal mining in the states of Karnataka.
