The total lunar eclipse would only be visible from certain parts of eastern India, while the rest of the country will be able to witness a partial lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse will happen in the following stages and at the given times, as per NASA’s official website:

  • The Penumbral Eclipse Begins at 01:32 pm IST where the moon will begin to enter the first the outer part of Earth’s shadow and will start to get dimmer.

  • The Partial Eclipse will begin at 2.39 pm IST when the Moon will be partially covered by the Earth’s shadow and will appear as if there is a portion of the Moon missing/darkened.

  • The Total Eclipse will begin at 3.47 pm IST and the entire Moon will be covered by the Earth’s shadow or umbra. The colour of the moon will appear as if it’s copper red. If you want a clearer view of this stage of the eclipse, it is recommended to use a telescope or a pair of binoculars.

  • The Total Eclipse will end at 5.12 pm IST and as the Moon starts moving away from the Earth’s shadow, it will start to turn into a partial lunar eclipse once again.

  • The Partial Eclipse will end at 6.19 pm as most of the moon will move away from under the Earth’s umbra or shadow. At this point, only a small portion of the moon will remain dimmed/hidden.

  • The lunar eclipse will be completely over at 7.20 pm IST as the moon will completely move away from under the Earth’s shadow. The last lunar eclipse of the year will be over.

About Lunar Eclipse

As per NASA, a lunar eclipse is a celestial phenomenon that occurs when the Sun, the Moon and the Earth align in such a way that the Moon passes under the Earth’s shadow. When a total lunar eclipse happens, the entirety of the Moon comes under the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow called the umbra and it turns the colour of copper-red. Due to this reason, lunar eclipses are often called 'Blood Moons'.
