Ola 'Temporarily Halts' Laying Off 200 Engineers
This change in stance comes after Ola on Tuesday said it will lay off 10% of its engineers due to a "restructuring exercise".
Ride-hailing major and electric scooter manufacturer Ola Group said it has "temporarily halted" laying off 200 engineers, as was planned earlier.
The decision has not been reversed, but only temporarily halted, said a company spokesperson, who did not wish to be named.
They are installing a better assessment process to judge engineering talent and will assess people as per the new methodology, the person quoted above said.
The change in stance comes after the Bhavish Aggarwal-led firm on Tuesday issued a statement saying it will lay off 10% of its 2,000-strong engineering workforce due to a "restructuring exercise" at the group level.
"Ola Electric has been increasing its focus on non-software engineering domains with a clear focus on building engineering and R&D capabilities across vehicle, cell, battery, manufacturing and automation, autonomous engineering streams and others," it had said in a statement.
It said that it is now focused on being a "vertically integrated mobility company" because of which it is "centralising operations" to "minimize redundancy and build a strong lateral structure that strengthens relevant roles and functions. The restructuring will impact approximately 10% of Ola’s overall engineering workforce."
On the flip side, the company said it will increase its engineer count to 5,000 over the next 18 months, as it focuses more on vehicle engineering, sourcing, product management and data science with Ola Electric.
