Sales for Indian automakers rose in August as supply of semiconductors improved.

Dispatches of passenger vehicles rose 21% over the year ago to 2,81,210 units in August 2022, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed. The segment comprising passenger cars, utility vehicles, and vans witnessed growth across categories.

Sequentially, however, sales fell 4.4%.

Good monsoon and the upcoming festive season is likely to increase demand, said SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said in a statement on Friday. "SIAM is keeping a close watch on the dynamic supply-side challenges," he said. "High CNG prices is a big challenge for the industry and we are keenly looking forward to interventions...from the government."

Total production of all passenger vehicles—excluding BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors and Volvo—three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles stood at 22.75 lakh units in August.
