Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of Tata Sons, was killed in a road accident near Mumbai on Sunday.

The untimely death of the scion of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group shocked the country, with condolence messages pouring in from all over.

"The untimely demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry is shocking," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter. "He was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess. His passing away is a big loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace," he tweeted

"Shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Cyrus Mistry," Gautam Adani, chairperson of Adani Group, said in a tweet.

"One of the finest gentlemen I have known, he was one of the best business minds of his generation. It is a tragic loss. He was called away too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."

"So sad to hear of the shocking news of the passing away of Cyrus Mistry in an accident. He was a friend, a gentleman, a man of substance. He was instrumental in creating the global construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji and ably led the Tata Group," Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Group, tweeted.

"Cyrus was the most thoughtful manager I encountered," Nirmalya Kumar - Lee Kong Chian, professor of marketing at Singapore Management University, told BQ Prime.

Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis also took to the social media platform assuring detailed investigation into the matter. "Shocked and deeply pained to know about the demise of former chairman of Tata Sons Shri Cyrus Mistry in an unfortunate accident near Palghar. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. ॐ शान्ति. Spoke to DGP and instructed for detailed investigations," he tweeted.

People who worked with Mistry lamented the loss of a grounded personality.

"I’m 72 years, I’ve known a few people, but none as kind, unassuming as Cyrus Mistry," Nawshir Mirza, former independent director at Tata Power, said.

"Cyrus Mistry was a very fine man with quality of a great human being. He was very well qualified and astute. Of all his qualities, his humility stood out," R Gopalakrishnan, former executive director, Tata Sons said.

Reminiscing about the initial days when Mistry joined the Tata Group, Gopalakrishnan said "he (Mistry) set as a priority, to befriend a large number of people in the group, and made the effort to connect with them and get to know them in a very short period of time".

He came to grips with the challenges of the job, and perhaps, in the process of consultation and execution, he might have been misunderstood or he misjudged; it could also have been a bit of both which led to the unfortunate event of his ouster from the position of Chairman of Tata Sons."

“Cyrus’ untimely demise comes as a great shock. As a person he was humble, gracious, personable and had a lovely sense of humour.
