Containing Coronavirus: Maruti Suzuki, M&M, Hero MotoCorp Suspend Production

Leading automobile manufacturers have suspended production at their plants to help contain the spread of coronavirus.

India’s leading automobile manufacturers announced that they’d suspend production at their manufacturing facilities to ensure employee safety and help contain the spread of coronavirus.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.

The country's largest car maker said it has decided to suspend production at its manufacturing facilities in Haryana with immediate effect due to the coronavirus outbreak.

"The company will shut production and office operations at its facilities in Gurugram and Manesar (Haryana) with immediate effect till further notice," Maruti Suzuki said in a statement.

  • The company's research and development centre at Rohtak will also remain closed, it added.
  • The duration of this shutdown will depend upon government policy.

The company's two plants in Haryana -- Manesar and Gurugram -- churn out 15.5 lakh vehicles per year.

Hero MotoCorp Ltd.

India’s largest two-wheeler maker today said it has suspended production at all its sites across the globe until March 31 in order to safeguard its employees against the novel coronavirus outbreak.

“With the safety and well-being of its employees as a top priority in view of the escalating Covid-19 situation, the company has decided to halt operations at all its global manufacturing facilities including in India, Colombia and Bangladesh - and the Global Parts Centre at Neemrana with immediate effect until March 31,” Hero MotoCorp said in a statement.

Employees at all the other functions and locations, including the Centre of Innovation and Technology at Jaipur, will continue to work from home, except for those whose physical presence is necessary to run the day-to-day essential services, it said.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

The Anand Mahindra-led company said it has decided to suspend operations at its manufacturing plants in Maharashtra to ensure employee safety and contain the spread of coronavirus.

The company has suspended manufacturing operations at its Nagpur plant with immediate effect and will also halt production at Chakan (Pune) and Kandivali (Mumbai) units from Monday night onwards, according to its statement.
