Adani Transmission has been certified 'water positive' by DNV Business Assurance India, implying that the transmission player's freshwater usage was less than its consumption of water from alternative sources.

DNV conducted a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the water balance index at Adani Transmission’s 30 substations and seven transmission line clusters across India from August to November this year.

Water balance is the difference between water credit and water debit.

Water credit denotes the sum of the estimated volumes of harvested rainwater and groundwater recharge quantities used by the company to replace the intake of estimated freshwater.

On the other hand, water debit refers to the volume of estimated or metered freshwater intake.

Adani Transmission defines the water balance index as water credit over water debit at each site, the company said in a statement.

"Based on the assessment of the water balance index, the total water credits of 49,766.86 cubic metres against the water debit of 46,894.38 cubic metres resulted in a water balance of 1.06 cubic meters—positive," the statement read.

The verification process is largely conducted by means of sample-based checks, methodology, measurement techniques, estimation methods, assumptions, and uncertainties involved in the process of water accounting as adopted by Adani Transmission.

DNV also performed a desk review of the water balance details and quantification methodology at various sites and rainwater harvesting structures such as rainwater recharge pits and storage ponds at these sites.
